Why Families Have Trusted FHVI for More Than 25 Years
Florida Heart & Vascular Institute (FHVI) was founded in Ocala in 1997 by Dr. Asad U. Qamar with a single, clear purpose: to deliver world-class cardiovascular expertise to Floridians without the bureaucracy of a large hospital system.
As an independent, physician-led practice, every clinical decision at FHVI is made by a board-certified cardiologist — not an insurance administrator or a hospital committee. Over the past 25 years, we’ve grown from a single Marion County clinic into 9 locations spanning Central, Southwest, and East Coast Florida, serving patients in Ocala, Lake Wales, Englewood, Punta Gorda, Davenport, Lehigh Acres, Port St. John, and beyond.
We built FHVI to meet the cardiovascular reality of Florida communities: an aging population with high rates of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension — and a significant share of patients who are uninsured or rely on Medicaid. We treat more uninsured and Medicaid cardiac patients than any other independent practitioner in our region, because in our view, patient outcomes — not insurance status — should determine access to care.

Heart-Healthy Living: Small Daily Habits That Protect Your Heart
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among Florida adults — but a large portion of cardiac risk is shaped by everyday choices. Here’s what our cardiologists discuss with nearly every patient who walks through our doors:
- Build meals around vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein
- Limit ultra-processed foods and added sugar
- Choose unsaturated fats (olive oil, nuts, fatty fish) over saturated fats
- Cut sodium to under 2,300 mg per day — especially if you have hypertension
- Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each wee
- Prioritize 7–9 hours of sleep; untreated sleep apnea is a known cardiac risk factor
- Manage chronic stress through movement, social connection, or counseling
- Avoid tobacco entirely and keep alcohol within moderate limits

Our Feedbacks
Dr. Qamar is the most caring physician I have ever been to. He took the best care of both of my parents for over 20 years. When I experienced my own cardiac issues, he was the only choice for me. Extremely knowledgeable, excellent at explaining everything, and uniquely empathetic.

More than 20 Years of Family Cardiac Care
Dr. Qamar saved my life. I had dilated cardiomyopathy and was an athlete — no one saw it coming. He had a defibrillator and pacemaker implanted. I have had nine shocks from it, but I would not be alive if he had not acted when he did. He also saved my son’s life after a widowmaker heart attack

Life Saved Twice — A Father and His Son
He saved my father’s life. I am forever grateful we found him to perform a procedure other doctors said could not be done. He is calm, skilled, and his bedside manner is beyond compare. No one is better at saving lives and genuinely caring about the patient as a human being.

A Procedure Other Doctors Said Was Impossible
My daughter had a heart rhythm disorder and we did not have insurance. We were never charged. The care was exceptional. Dr. Qamar is an outstanding human being with a big heart who really cares — not about money, but about his patients.

No Insurance. No Barrier. No Bill.
If it was not for this amazing cardiologist, my spouse would be in bad shape. He goes above and beyond for me and my family. Cardiology care is just as important as going to your primary care doctor. Do not wait until it is too late. Best cardiologist in Ocala, Florida.”

Above and Beyond — For the Whole Family
Dr. Mustapha performed his first peripheral vascular limb-salvage treatment more than a decade ago — preventing the amputation of the leg of a 52-year-old woman suffering from severe peripheral artery disease. That case became the beginning of a clinical mission that has since helped hundreds of patients avoid amputations that other physicians had declared inevitable. When you save someone’s leg, you are often saving their life.
